I went to see the Imitation Game the other night with no expectation at all. I did not know what the movie is about and I thought it's going to be some kinds of boring biographies. And the movie turns out to be a very compelling and meaningful story.
"Sometimes it is the people no one imagines anything of who do the things that no one can imagine." This quote first reminds me to never underestimate others. Sometimes we unconsciously judge someone. However, you never know what's going to happen. Some people will end up change the world. Some people will do things that matter. Second, I learned that I should never underestimate my own worths. Sometimes I give up when I did not even try. I assume things are too hard for me and I probably can't do it. However, each of us is born with a purpose. And it's very important to understand our strengths and abilities so we can maximize our potentials.
So what does that quote mean to me? Recently when I am applying for jobs, I thought that I won't qualify for the job and shy away from the opportunity. Now I learn that I need more confidence and take every chance I can get.
I loved that movie and was also pleasantly surprised about it. I've realized that I am super hard on myself when it comes to grades and exams. For some reason I've trained my brain to think of a B as failure, and in challenging college courses, it can be overbearing to keep receiving the message "failure failure failure". However, what I've realized is that not only are we more than our grades (duh) but we should seriously give ourselves a break. We are too hard on ourselves in so many things. I don't look good enough, I don't work out enough, I'm not smart enough... the list goes on. But do you really expect everyone to be beautiful, intelligent, kind, loving, athletic, healthy... 24/7? I think I would die! We all have our ups and our downs. We shouldn't judge ourself too hard when we are going through such a challenging time such as college. Good luck, and be more confident!!
ReplyDeleteGreat movie and great quote. Thanks for the reminder to never underestimate others or ourselves!
ReplyDeleteAwesome thought! I'm thinking I'm going to have to go see that movie now :) I think it is very true that although we need to have a realistic view on who we are, we also can't sell ourselves short. We are each unique and have characteristics that set us apart in a positive way. We each have something to offer and if we aren't honest as we portray ourselves for jobs, we aren't giving recruiters accurate information that they need. You are amazing and as you believe that and portray that, people will notice! People appreciate that humble confidence.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your thoughts Mia, they ring true to me. I think that's what I've been hearing in the messages from General Conference today as well--it's the little things that count. Progress is a slow and steady thing, and small progress is still noteworthy! I'll have to go see this movie, I hadn't heard any reviews about it so thank you!
ReplyDeleteLoved this movie! It opened my eyes in so many ways. Thanks for sharing!
